Celebrating a True Wicklow Hero: Fiona Gammel, Winner of WillowWarm’s Random Acts of Warmth

At Stafford Fuels, we believe warmth is about more than just fuel; it’s about kindness, community and looking out for one another. That’s why we were incredibly proud to see a remarkable Wicklow woman recognised through WillowWarm’s Random Acts of Warmth campaign.

This winter, WillowWarm launched Random Acts of Warmth, a nationwide initiative encouraging people across Ireland to nominate a neighbour, friend, family member or community hero who has gone above and beyond for others; someone truly deserving of a little warmth in return.

What followed was nothing short of inspiring.

A Nationwide Celebration of Kindness

Over 1,300 heartfelt nominations were submitted from all corners of the island of Ireland. Each entry was an act of kindness in itself, sharing stories of selflessness, generosity and compassion within local communities.

Selected nominees were surprised with a beautifully curated Winter Warmth Hamper, featuring premium WillowWarm carbon-neutral briquettes alongside a selection of bespoke, Irish-made winter treats from small Irish businesses.

To make the moments even more special, hampers were hand-delivered by WillowWarm Brand Ambassador Dermot Bannon, creating unforgettable and emotional experiences for recipients and their families.

You can read more about the campaign at willowwarm.ie/random-acts-of-warmth.

Honouring Over 50 Years of Dedication to Animal Welfare

One of those deserving winners was Fiona Gammel (founder of Wicklow Animal Welfare), a woman whose commitment to animals spans more than 50 years.

Fiona was nominated for her tireless fundraising, hands-on rescue work and unwavering dedication to the welfare, rehabilitation and rehoming of unwanted dogs, cats and horses from across Wicklow and beyond. Through Wicklow Animal Welfare, Fiona and her volunteer team have transformed the lives of countless animals, giving them a second chance at a loving home.

Her dedication has not gone unnoticed by the many families who have adopted animals through WAW, all of whom are deeply grateful for the care and compassion shown to their newest family members.

A Moment of Recognition That Meant the World

The surprise visit from Dermot Bannon was an emotional one for Fiona, the WAW team and everyone involved. It was a powerful reminder that behind every rescue organisation are volunteers whose work often goes unseen, yet makes an immeasurable difference every single day.

Random Acts of Warmth was created to shine a light on exactly this kind of kindness, and Fiona’s story embodies everything the campaign stands for.

Proud to Celebrate Our Local Heroes

As an Irish company based in Wicklow for over 30 years, Stafford Fuels is immensely proud to celebrate heroes from our own community. People like Fiona Gammel and the entire Wicklow Animal Welfare team remind us of the strength, generosity and compassion that exist right on our doorstep.

Today, we celebrate Fiona, her volunteers, and the animals whose lives have been changed because of their dedication. Thank you for the warmth you bring to Wicklow, and far beyond.

Who’s made your day a little warmer recently?

Perhaps someone surprised you with flowers or sent a thoughtful card. Maybe a neighbour dropped off dinner when you were feeling low or took in your bins without being asked. Even the smallest gestures can mean a huge deal and are beautiful examples of Random Acts of Warmth.

To enter, simply nominate a friend, family member, or neighbour who you feel deserves an extra-cosy winter. Share their story with us at WillowWarm.ie and be sure to like and share our competition post on social media. We’ll be selecting four heartfelt entries to receive a surprise visit and a hamper full of winter cheer.

Research shows that simple acts of kindness not only lift the spirits of those who receive them but also improve the wellbeing of those who give them. Through the idea of paying it forward, your act of recognition could spark a ripple effect of goodwill across the community.

Let’s spread some warmth together this Winter, one kind gesture at a time.

This Winter, WillowWarm is running a “Random Acts of Warmth” competition

A chance to win a beautifully curated WillowWarm hamper. Each hamper includes our premium WillowWarm briquettes, along with a selection of wonderful goodies to enjoy!

Maybe someone sent you flowers or you received a ‘thinking of you’ card. Or maybe someone made you cookies or sent over dinner. Did someone do something unexpected for you at home? Like taking the dog for a walk. Or tried to be very quiet so you could nap. Or emptied the dishwasher without being asked. ALL of those are Random Acts of Warmth.

To be in with a chance of winning, we invite you to nominate a friend, family member or neighbour who deserves a warm and cosy winter. In addition to submitting their nomination and story via WillowWarm.ie, entries must also like and share our social competition post. We will select 4 winners.

Research shows that random acts of kindness at least have a positive effect on the well being of the giver (Curry et al., 2018). Often, the receiver will want to do something nice in return when they get the opportunity. Via the principle of “Pay it forward”, this can also have positive ripple effects on society.
